World Day Against Trafficking Persons
WHEREAS, the July 30th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2013; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Fort Frances would like to raise awareness and educate its citizens about this harmful modern-day slavery which is taking place in every part of the world, and even in our town and communities; and
WHEREAS, human trafficking results in forced labour, sexual exploitation, and coercion into criminal activity, primarily to women and children.
WHEREAS, the Fort Frances and Area Human Trafficking Coalition was formed due to the increase in Human Trafficking Victims in the Rainy River District; and
WHEREAS, the mandate of the Fort Frances and Area Human Trafficking Coalition is to be the “hub” of the resources and will provide education, prevention, and awareness about Human Trafficking to our communities of practice; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Frances and Area Human Trafficking Coalition will partner and collaborate with other Anti-Human Trafficking initiatives across Canada and beyond.
WHEREAS, the Fort Frances and Area Human Trafficking Coalition believe that all forms of human trafficking and sexual exploitation must end; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Frances and Area Human Trafficking Coalition will be committed to taking the lead within the communities to provide support and services to all trafficked persons.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Andrew Hallikas of the Town of Fort Frances by the power invested in me, do hereby proclaim July 30th as “World Day Against Trafficking Persons” in Fort Frances, and further, I encourage all residents to educate themselves about human trafficking and the harm it causes.
