Who We're Looking For in a Volunteer

Any able-bodied individual over the age of 18 that is passionate about community service and helping others. Our workplace is inclusive, inviting people of all races and genders to join our team.

What does a Volunteer Firefighter do?

A Volunteer Firefighter for the Town of Fort Frances Fire Rescue Services does many things!

  • Attending regular training sessions and drills
  • Participating in community education and fire prevention programs
  • Assisting in rescue operations
  • Conducting fire suppression activities
  • Responding to emergency calls

Why are Volunteer Firefighters important?

Volunteer firefighters:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the community;
  • Provide quick and efficient emergency response;
  • Support the permanent firefighting staff;
  • Enhance the overall capacity of the Fire Rescue Services.

How Much Time Would I Commit to Volunteering?

It differs throughout the year but we ask that our volunteers commit to the following:

  • Coursework
  • Team trainings
  • Attending 60% of fire and rescue services calls

What are the Benefits to Volunteering?

We use the word 'Volunteer' but these are paid positions, with an hourly rate paid for trainings and calls attended. Other benefits are:

  • Free professional development in coursework, with successful completion leading to upgraded rates of pay
  • Free professional development in training
  • Pager and gear provided
  • Camaraderie and teamwork
  • Making a difference in your community

Volunteer Application Process

  1. Fill out the application form and provide 3 references. Resumes are optional.
  2. Email application and optional resume to jobs@fortfrances.ca
  3. Await a phone call for an interview
  4. Interview with the Fire Department
  5. Conduct a fitness test with the Fire Department
  6. Upon offer of Volunteer employment, a criminal background check at own cost is required
