Re: Consultation Period for the Renaming of Colonization Road East and Colonization Road West

Mayor and Council of the Town of Fort Frances have passed Resolution No. 637 declaring their intent to rename Colonization Road East and Colonization Road West. By initiating the change through resolution, Council has provided administration the authority to issue Notice of Public Meeting to commence a 30-day consultation period prior to hosting an open public meeting as outlined in the Street Naming and Renaming Policy (No. 6.4).

Community Safety and Well-Being Plan in Development for the Rainy River District

The Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board (RRDSSAB) is partnering with eighteen regional services to develop a Community Safety and Well-Being plan that will target all municipalities within the Rainy River District. The plan will involve identifying key local priority risk areas to focus on with the goal of safer communities with less crime and social disorder.

A special meeting of Committee of the Whole of Council is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Monday February 1, 2021 to be held virtually with a Special Council meeting to immediately follow.

At this meeting Council will further review and discuss the 2021 Capital and Operating Budgets and will include one in-camera item respecting identifiable individuals.

Public Notice: Colonization Road Renaming Process

The Town of Fort Frances is actively investigating a meaningful approach to the potential renaming of Colonization Road East and West within the community as a small step forward in our path to reconciliating past, present and future relationships with our neighboring Indigenous communities. The Town understands that entertaining such a change may generate a variety of impacts on all associated parties and is researching these potential impacts.
