Commissioner of Oath
A Commissioner of Oath is not a Notary Public. If you require a document to be Notarized, this cannot be done through the Town of Fort Frances.
Booking Your Appointment
It is highly suggested you make an appointment as our Commissioner of Oaths are often unavailable.
- Contact cgreig@fortfrances.ca or (807) 274-5323 x1212
By virtue of their office under the Municipal Act, the Municipal Clerk and Deputy Clerk are Commissioners of Oaths.
Many documents require that the person signing the document do so under oath before a Commissioner of Oaths. (If you object to taking a sworn oath, solemnly affirming the document is also acceptable.)
Things to Know
- Commissioners are not the same as a Notary Public. Make sure before you make an appointment that a Commissioner of Oath will suffice.
- There is a charge for Commissioning, including a smaller charge for any additional signatures needed.
- Commissioning is by appointment only. Contact the Clerk's Department (contacts at the bottom of page) to make an appointment.
- Persons required to provide their own information must be present and present a valid, not expired ID; no copies of ID accepted.
- Read the document completely in advance of arriving at the Civic Centre. This is extremely important as you will be swearing / affirming and ultimately signing that the statements in the document are true as if you were in a court of law. Ensure that you have everything you need including letters of instruction, and completed documents.
- It is up to the Commissioner of Oath what they are and are not comfortable signing. Please consider this.
- The only copy a Commissioner can certify is a true copy is one that they produce themselves. If a certified true copy is required that is not from the Town of Fort Frances, you may require a Notary Public.
- Your name will be kept in a logbook of people that had Commissioning complete, along with the method of ID you presented. No other personal information is kept, and the Clerk's do not keep a record of what your appointment was for.
