Position Summary: 
  • The incumbent is accountable for the execution and completion of various works related to the Operations and Facilities Division on a seasonal basis (Approximately mid-April to mid-October on an annual basis).

Direction Received: 
  • The incumbent works within established rules, practices and procedures and ultimately takes direction from the Transportation Superintendent, Foreman, Lead hand or such person designated by the Transportation Superintendent or Division Manager.

General Responsibilities: 
  • Work involves different procedures including use and operation of equipment and the making of minor decisions requiring some independent judgement.
  • Rake and clean parks, cemeteries, and boulevards
  • Plot and flower bed preparation such as edging, filling, tilling, and raking.
  • Plants, weeds, and cultivates flowers
  • Waters flowers
  • Cuts grass and trims hedges on Town properties which includes cemeteries, baseball diamonds, outdoor rinks, parks, riverbanks, boat launches and overpass.
  • Paints and repairs boulevards and equipment at Pither’s Point Park, and the Fort Frances and Riverview Cemeteries
  • Removal of diseased Dutch elm trees.
  • Plants trees
  • Stump removal and clean up
  • Internments
  • Maintenance of building and roads within department
  • Foundation setting and repairing at cemeteries
  • Landscaping at Town parks and cemeteries
  • As the need arises, may be assigned labourer duties for other departments on a temporary basis
  • Any other duties as assigned.

 

Effort: 
  • Work demands concentration for moderate periods of time on a daily basis.  Interruptions are occasional to frequent when instructed to go to other jobs.  Most work is subject to checks and controls or is verified by others in subsequent operations.
Education and Qualifications: 
  • Grade 12 Diploma (or General Education Diploma–G.E.D.)
  • Valid Class DZ Ontario approved Driver’s License is an asset
Conditions of Employment: 
  • Required to work an 8-hour shift (7:30 AM – 11:30 AM and 12 noon to 4:00 PM) with occasional out of town travel. 
  • May be required to work overtime up to 20% of normal working hours. 
  • Spends the majority of the workday outdoors with exposure to disagreeable outdoor elements.
  • Exposure to work related hazards is occasional.
