Getting Your Marriage Certificate

A Marriage Certificate is a document issued by the Province of Ontario which demonstrates proof of marriage. Here is the process after your wedding for receiving your Marriage Certificate:

  • Your Officiant mails your completed marriage licence to the Ontario Registrar's Office. (If there are any corrections needed, the Registrar will mail the marriage licence back to the Officiant to fix.)
  • You can order your marriage certificate online: https://www.ontario.ca/page/how-get-copy-ontario-marriage-certificate-online
  • The Province of Ontario does charge a fee for the marriage certificate.
  • The Registrar will complete their next necessary steps in having your marriage documented with the Province.
  • Once the marriage is registered officially with the Province, they will mail you your certificate.
  • Anticipate 1.5-3 months to receive the marriage certificate.

Please note the following:

  • No Officiant, including the Town of Fort Frances Marriage Officiant, can request the status or control the timeline once the marriage licence has been sent into the Province.
  • Remember to double-check your marriage licence before your marriage for any errors the issuer may have made.
  • Do not make any changes to the marriage licence yourself.
  • If when issued there was only one person to pick up the licence and sign off as having been issued it, do not have your partner sign on the second signature line. This will cause the Registrar to mail the licence back to the Officiant.
  • Our couples have experienced longer waits for their marriage certificate in the summer during popular wedding months.
  • Mail strikes, such as the 2024 Canada Post strike, may cause longer waits.
