Marriage Licence
Before you get married in the Province of Ontario, you need an Ontario marriage licence. Please fill out, print, and sign this marriage application form to obtain a marriage licence: Marriage Application Form. (If this PDF does not open in your browser, try downloading it and opening it from your computer. A paper copy can also be made available through the Town Clerk).
Fees:
As of 2024, a Marriage Licence through the Town of Fort Frances costs $153.00.
Expiry:
Once a marriage licence is issued, the marriage must take place within 90 days or it is no longer valid.
By Appointment: Marriage Licence Application and Issuance
The application and issuing of a marriage licence are conducted by appointment through the Clerk's Office. Depending on the Clerk handling your application, the process may vary slightly. Here’s what you need to know:
Process:
Prepare Your Application:
Complete the Marriage Application Form with all mandatory information, including choosing your date of marriage. If you have been married before which resulted in divorce or annulment, original paperwork is required.
Schedule an Appointment:
Contact the Deputy Clerk to make an appointment.
Attend the Appointment:
One or both applicants must attend the appointment. If only one applicant can attend, they must bring two sets each of valid government-issued ID. For more details, see Identification Needed for a Marriage Licence.
During the Appointment:

The Clerk will ensure the form is complete, verify the four pieces of ID, and receive any other required paperwork.

The Clerk will direct the applicant(s) to pay the full amount of the licence at Reception.

The Clerk will issue the marriage licence during the same appointment, which typically lasts 20-30 minutes.

The marriage licence will be handed to the applicants at the end of the appointment and it is now their responsibility.

Other Requirements:

In Addition:
- Marriage Licences issued by the Town of Fort Frances are only valid for marriages in the Province of Ontario.
- In Ontario, there are no residency or citizenship requirements, blood tests, or medical certificate requirements in order to obtain a marriage licence, however you will be required to certify information under oath.
- If you do not understand or are not able to read English, an interpreter is needed.
When Married:
- When the marriage takes place, the applicants, along with the officiant, and two witnesses will complete the licence form.
- The officiant will be responsible for mailing the marriage licence to the Province.
- You can order a marriage certificate six (6) to eight (8) weeks after being married: Order an Ontario Marriage Certificate. This document may be needed to show legal proof you are married, apply for certain social benefits, settle an estate, change a last name, or assume a last name after marriage.
